Salkantay Trek Description:
This adventure includes two nights of acclimatization in Cusco before the Trek, the complete 5 days Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, an overnight by Machu Picchu in the town of Aguas Calientes and back to Cusco for a last night.
The Cordillera Vilcabamba is an impressive range of mountains which include the massive Salkantay snowcapped mountain (6,264m) and three others over 6000m. Salkantay is an outstanding snow peak, located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cuzco in south central Peru. It is the highest mountain of the Cordillera. Because of its proximity to the city, it is easily accessible and is climbed frequently.
In order to complete the Salkantay Trail, you need to have a reasonable level of fitness, age shouldn\'t be a barrier. The most important thing is to be well acclimatized to the altitude. The maximum height above sea level along the way is 4600 m (15092 ft), that is why we include 2 days in Cusco before the trek. This period is ideal for visiting the city of Cusco, the nearby ruins of Sacsayhuaman and the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Appropriate clothing along this hike
Hiking pants and T-shirts are recommended during the day, complemented by sweaters, fleeces and waterproof jackets. It is very convenient to have light raingear available in the daypack (rain poncho or jacket and/or rain pants) as the weather changes easily and rains can suddenly occur. At night, warm clothing is required, down jackets can be useful, otherwise a fleece and a jacket. During the fourth day (if sunny) and in Machupicchu, convertible hiking pants are useful, as can be switched into shorts if necessary. Machupicchu has a warm climate, getting only cold at night. The rest of necessary implements are included in the βWhat we recommend that you bringβ list.
Acclimatization
We do recommend that you arrive in Cuzco at least 2 days before the trek departs to help you become acclimatised to the altitude and avoid possible problems with altitude illness while on trek. All treks from Cuzco gain altitude quickly on the first day(s) with some treks gaining more than 1000m in altitude in a single day and it is important to be well accliamtised before commencing the trek.
It is advisable to have two full days in Cuzco to recover from your travel and to do at least one day hike to higher altitudes help with acclimatisation. We canorganise day hikes & other tours around Cuzco for you.
If you have already been in another area of Peru at high altitude before arriving in Cuzco, we still recommend you have a complete day in Cuzco to rest, recover from your travel and enjoy the sights and sounds of Cuzco before departing for the trek.
Best Seasons
The best months are April, May - November, during the year and Salkantay Trek Team offers the amazing landscape during these months. The weather is sunny and warm, although the nights are cold and temperatures can fall to freezing. Weather can change rapidly and be unpredictable. Please note that when trekking in Cusco region, you will be moving from warmer climates at low levels to conditions of well below freezing. Be prepared for all eventualities!
